My sustainable journey – Pam Ashton

I am not green but I am trying.  When I hop onto that plane to New York to see my family it will nullify everything else I do.  But there are things I try to do – perhaps the most important of these is to campaign for urgent action by the government.  My little efforts:

  • Recycling everything even to the extent of taking plastic to the recycling centre on our bicycles

  • Giving up the car, using bicycles and public transport

  • Resisting the urge to wash clothes after one wearing

  • Using environmentally-kind cleaning and washing products

  • Installing cavity wall insulation, double glazing and roof-space insulation

  • Using low-energy lightbulbs and not leaving appliances on standby

… amount to a pathetic gesture so long as energy generation is so inefficient, CO2 is not sequestered or captured and someone else immediately uses the space on the road that I have vacated with a gas guzzler – facilitated and enabled by central and local government.

Carbon rationing? – bring it on!
