Why a network?
“The Health and Sustainable Development Network was set up in 2006 by Alison Hill, Jenny Griffiths and Jackie Spiby. (It was originally called the Convergence of Health and Sustainable Development Network, and focused on the ‘Warwick Manifesto’, so-called because its gestation was at the Faculty of Public Health training conference in Warwick in 2006). We are working the implementation of the manifesto, but over time the network has come to be important in its own right.
The purpose of the network is to enable people and organisations in the health community to work together to give a much higher priority to sustainable development, and in particular acting to prevent the worst effects of climate change. We aim to provide mutual support, and share ideas and information. We try to send out a monthly newsletter, and welcome items for inclusion.
We welcome new members of the network, be they individuals, groups or organisations. If you would like to join us, please contact Alison Hill or Jenny Griffiths.
We work closely with the Faculty of Public Health (for whose support we are very grateful) and the Climate and Health Council and also liaise with the NHS Sustainable Development Unit and the UK Public Health Association.

The Climate and Health Council
As well as working closely with the Faculty of Public Health, the Health and Sustainable Development Network works in partnership with the Climate and Health Council to inform, affirm, advocate, innovate and disseminate. We jointly seek to:
Ø Affirm the importance of personal action
Ø Inspire and motivate NHS organisations to take action
Ø Support the public health and clinical communities in reaching out to patients and communities
Ø Lobby and advocate at all levels
Ø Communicate with the wider public health workforce in local government and NGOs
Ø Promote the development of personal carbon trading
